Introduction

This page describes how AlexisHuxley installs XP.

Procedure

  1. Install the OS, accepting all defaults.
  2. Change the display size to 1280x1024.
  3. Shutdown, freeze, boot.
  4. If the machine is a VM then, from now on, use vncviewer to access it; don't use virt-viewer.

  5. Map network drives.
  6. Install the following:
    1. firefox (accept all defaults)
    2. clamwin (accept all defaults except for installing the 'Ask' toolbar)
  7. Start control panel and:
    1. From the left panel, switch to the 'classic' view
    2. From the tools menu, set the 'tasks' to 'use Windows classic folders'
    3. Work your way through all icons adjusting stuff except don't enable updates yet.
  8. Hide desktop icons by right-clicking the desktop, going to 'arrange icons by' and unchecking 'Show desktop icons'.
  9. Sooner or later the system tray icon will say that just 1 update is available, follow the prompts (don't do this any other way!).
  10. Review security settings so that anti virus is not managed by windows.
  11. Reboot and check all ok.
  12. Shutdown, freeze, boot.
  13. Sooner or later the system tray icon will say that a stack of updates are available, disable 'Windows Genuine Notification Advangtage', ask not to be asked about this again, and follow the prompts (don't do this any other way!).
  14. Repeat the shutdown, freeze, boot, wait, install updates, ... until no more are installed.
  15. Arrange start menus as preferred (including merging Administrator's into All Users)
  16. Create an account for 'alexis'.
  17. Go to http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/WindowsGuestDrivers/Download_Drivers and follow the link for downloading the virtio drivers.

  18. Go to control panel and work your way through each setting.
  19. Start a file browser and modify the settings.
  20. Right-click on the task bar and customise.
